Gonado-Somatic Index of the Whipfin Silver Biddy Gerres filamentosus From Sharavati Estuary, Central West Coast of India

Gonado- Somatic Index (GSI) of Gerres filamentosus ranged from 0.2 to 1.6 in males and 0.7 to 4.3 in females and showed high peak in the month of June in both the sexes. During the present study the higher values of GSI were observed from April to June which ranges between 0.9 to 1.6 in the first year and 1.0 to 1.8 in the second year for males and 2.8 to 4.3 in the first and 2.8 to 4.6 in the second year for females. Therefore it was observed that the fish spawned once in a year with one spawning peak in month of June as indicated by the Gonado Somatic Index.
