The rural after the exodus: the implications of the depopulation of the fields in Arroio do Só - Santa Maria/RS, Brazil O rural depois do êxodo: as implica es do despovoamento dos campos no distrito de Arroio do Só, município de Santa Maria/RS, Brasil

This study aims to understand the sociospatial transformations resulting from the depopulation of the fields and their effects on the rural landscape of Arroio do Só in Santa Maria - RS. To this end, we attempted to identify changes in the way of life of rural people, their activities and relationships and understand how this process has occurred, its causes and its impact on quality of life and social structure of the population that remained in place. The discussion on the modernization of agriculture is key to understanding this process. This district was chosen as a research site because it is a town that, in the past, had a very big socioeconomic dynamism, and now, according to the bankruptcy of several companies and the consequent emigration of much of the population, the sociospatial dynamic has changed. It was collected data from a secondary source of FIBGE and FEE in order to periodize population dynamics of the district, county and state. The qualitative research was conducted through interviews with the subjects in the field and their representatives, with the help of the Field Diary Este trabalho tem por objetivo apreender as transforma es socioespaciais decorrentes do processo de despovoamento dos campos e seus reflexos sobre a paisagem rural do distrito de Arroio do Só, em Santa Maria – RS. Para isso buscou-se identificar as mudan as no modo de vida da popula o rural, suas atividades e rela es e compreender como se deu esse processo, suas causas e suas repercuss es na qualidade de vida e na estrutura social da popula o que permaneceu no local. A discuss o sobre a moderniza o da agricultura é fundamental para a compreens o desse processo. Esse distrito foi escolhido como local de pesquisa por ser uma localidade que, no passado tinha um grande dinamismo socioecon mico, e agora, em fun o das falências das várias empresas e da consequente emigra o de grande parte da popula o, a dinamica socioespacial sofreu altera es. Foram coletados dados de fonte secundária da FIBGE e FEE, a fim de periodizar as dinamicas demográficas do distrito, do município e do Estado. A pesquisa qualitativa foi realizada através de entrevistas com os sujeitos do campo e seus representantes, com auxilio do Diário de Campo
