Entre village et royaume. La divinité du hundi des Joria Poraja (Orissa, Inde) Between Village and Kingdom : the Joria Poraja’s “Hundi Divinity” (Orissa, India)

Cet article cherche à clarifier l’identité d’une divinité présente dans de nombreux villages du sud de l’Orissa, en Inde. Cette divinité est interprétée comme une forme de déesse terre tribale dans la vulgate ethnologique. L’on montrera qu’il s’agit, au contraire, dans le cas des Joria Poraja, d’une sorte de pilier du village miniature, incarnant le lien entre le sol ou la localité, le ciel et les habitants. Ce point de vue interne n’est cependant pas exclusif d’un point de vue externe associant plut t cette divinité à l’ancien royaume régional, sinon à une déesse pan-hindoue telle que Durga. This article aims to clarify the identity of a divinity existing in numerous villages in South Orissa, in India. This divine being is commonly interpretated, by ethnologists, as a local kind of “tribal earth goddess”. On the contrary, we try to show that it is a sort of miniaturized village pillar, in the Joria Poraja case, materializing the link between the soil or the locality, the sky and the inhabitants. This internal perspective is, nevertheless, complementary to an external one, according to which the village divinity refers also to the former regional kingdom, if not to a pan-hindu goddess like Durga.
