MERETAS KEBAHAGIAAN UTAMA DI TENGAH PUSARAN BUDAYA KONSUMERISME GLOBAL: Perspektif Etika Keutamaan Ibnu Miskawaih

The emergence of consumerist culture in the mid of modern society has provoked reactions. Those who support this consumerist attitude argued that individual happiness could be represented by supporting individual liberties and human rights, particularly through the maximization of consuming comfortable commodities and luxuries. But what do we actually mean with consumption? Is the happiness through consuming goods that the modern culture offered true and correct? This paper discusses the modern culture in the light of the ethical philosophy developed by Ibn Miskawaih, a leading muslim scholar in the field of Islamic ethics. The article concludes that consumerism leads many to the crisis of identity. It is due to the fact that the consumerism inclines to lead people into the selfishness and socially-negative. Budaya konsumerisme yang lahir dalam masyarakat modern memicu beragam reaksi. Kalangan yang mendukung konsumerisme berpendapat bahwa kebahagiaan individu tidak dapat diwujudkan melainkan melalui kemerdekaan individual dan hak asasi manusia, utamanya dalam menikmati komoditas yang mewah. Namun, apa yang disebut dengan “konsumerisme” itu? Apakah kebahagian yang dilahirkan konsumerisme adalah sejati? Artikel ini mendiskusikan budaya modern dari kacamata filsafat etika yang dikembangkan Ibn Miskawaih. Penulis berargumen bahwa konsumerisme menyebabkan orang terjerembab ke dalam persoalan krisis identitas. Ini disebabkan karena konsumerisme menyebabkan seseorang terjatuh pada egoisme dan tidak acuh terhadap kehidupan sosial mereka.
