This article analyzes the relationships between the Holy See and theEcumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The analyzeattempts to present the successive steps by which the authority of the Pope extended itself in opposition to the Byzantine Empire.
