The “vision with” André: narrator and narrative focus in Lavoura arcaica

This paper presents an interpretation of the novel Lavoura arcaica, by Raduan Nassar, regarding the elements narrator and narrative focus. It aims to investigate how the discourse produced and controlled by the narrator's memory as a productive source builds the organization of the text. From the standpoint of narratology, this paper demonstrates how André, the main character, manipulates and leads the narrative through the characterization of time, space and characters ughout. Throughout the work were used the theories of Genette on categories of narrator and time, of Bachelard into space, and finally that of Pouillon for the characterization of narrative focus.
