PSYCHOANALYTICAL APPROACH OF A VOICE UNPRECEDENTED: A HISTORY OF CASTRATI

Born of the religious chorus, the castrato, after a detour attracted a lot of attention on the stage of the opera, goes back to it. While the castrato voice was the centerpiece of the opera seria there are still at the beginning of 20 century, but at the price of confining himself at the choir of the Cappella Papale. The question which arises to us is then this one: why the castrato voice adulated, during the eighteenth century and more during the nineteenth century, is it perceived as obscene?
