Les temps des "Bilgueitt": Política tribal numa aldeia saheliana do século XXIKeywords: Mauritania Abstract: After twenty five years of autocratic rule in the year 2006 the Islamic Republic of Mauritania hold free elections. This paper considers the municipal elections of November 2006 in the sahelian village of Taguilalet (Trarza region), discussing the concept of tribe as apprehended throughout this new political process. I also discuss the the zuaia (maraboutic) identitary rhetoric, and the form it was renegotiated in the course of the electoral campaign. The ethnographic data here presented is based on fieldwork among the Oulad Sidi al-Vali tribe.
