Abstract:

One of the disputatious subjects about Turkish language is the structure of the third person possessive suffix and the usage of the words which take that suffix in the accusative case. In the historical texts, using of the different forms for the accusative case is one of the facts that make the problem difficult to solve. In this article, we firstly separated the approaches about the usage of the words with the third person possessive suffix in the accusative case into two groups: 1. Possessive suffix (+sI / + I) + Accusative case suffix (+n) 2. Possessive suffix [+(s) I (n)] + Accusative case (0). Secondly, we tried to establish the forms of the words with the third person possessive suffix in the accusative case in the Orkhon Inscriptions, by considering the verb lür- “to kill”. We determined that all objects, which were used with the verb lür- and which take the third person possessive suffix, end with the sound “n”. Finally, we explained the subject theoretically by accepting the third person possessive suffix as +(s) I (n).
