THE TWO WOMEN TYPES IN THE INTIBAH / NT B H ROMANINDA ELE ALINAN K KADIN T PKeywords: Life style , Characteristics , Type , Unchasteness , Loyalty Abstract: After “Tanzimat Fermani” in 1839 in Turkey, we observe the emergence of different types of people with different life styles and cultural values. The psychological novel of Namik Kemal entitled Intibah, attaches great importance in terms of demonstrating such types of people who display different characteristics both psychologically and morally. Throughout the novel the unfavorable type of woman is represented by Mehpeyker and the ideal type of woman is represented by Dilasub. Although Mehpeyker is rich in physical beauty, she is morally corrupted and this corruption is most apparent in her unchasteness. Dilasub is idealized by her physical and moral characteristics and what makes her ideal is her loyalty. Namik Kemal through his novel suggests that the real beauty lies in the moral characteristics of a woman, not in the physical appearance.
