THE METAPHORS THAT TURKISH TEACHER CANDIDATES USE CONCERNING Türk e retmen Adaylar n n “ retmen” ve “ renci” Kavramlar na li kin Kulland klar MetaforlarKeywords: Metaphor , Turkish teacher candidates , teacher , student Metafor , Türk e retmeni adaylar , retmen , renci Abstract: The English word “metaphor” which is used for different concepts like metaphor and imitation in Turkish has become one of the most important data collection methods in qualitative researches lately. Metaphor can be described as a concept expressing a concept or a situation with an other concept or situation, which is dependent on the use of tongue for a symbolic purpose. In different disciplines of social sciences, there had been many researches on metaphors since 1980’s. Some of these researches are connected with education. Metaphors can be beneficial on planning, developing curriculum, encouraging learning and improving creative thinking in education. In addition, metaphors are benefited in determination of the professional perceptions of the teachers and the student teachers’. The aim of this study is to gather the metaphors, which are formed by Turkish teacher candidates’ perceptions towards “teacher” and “student” concepts whose occupation will be language teaching and to reveal the kinds of perception ways by classifying the gathered metaphors under various categories. The data of this study is firstly evaluated by the content analysis based on the qualitative research and then chi-square test is applied to the groups of the dominant category. The result revealed in this study is the fact that Turkish teacher candidates are mostly considering the teacher as a source of knowledge and the student as a receiver of knowledge. Another important result is that a part of Turkish teacher candidates is considering the teacher as a producer and shaper and the student as being produced and shaped. In the direction of the stated findings of the research, it can be said that the education Turkish teacher candidates are receiving dependent on their experiences from the past is not orienting them to a modern understanding of education. ngilizce “metaphor” s zcü üne kar l k gelen ve Türk ede mecaz, benzetme, e retileme gibi farkl kavramlar n yerine kullan lan metafor, son d nemlerde nitel ara t rmalar n en nemli veri toplama ara lar ndan birini olu turmaktad r.
