Abstract:

OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted to make a profile of the recently diagnosed cancer patients in stanbul University Oncology Institute. METHODS: We investigated 6253 patients (3183 males [50.9%], 3070 females [49.1%]) who applied to the institute in the years 2001 to 2002. Frequency tables were calculated with SPSS 7.5 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, USA). For females the most frequent five cancer types were breast (34.7%), gastrointestinal tract (14.3%), genital system (13.8%), lymphoid system (5.8%) and respiratory (5.6%) cancers. For males the order was respiratory system (29.8%), gastrointestinal system (18.4%), genital system (10.2%), lymphoid system (6.4%) and oral cavity (5.0%) cancers. Current smokers were 43.3% for males and 17.6% for females. RESULTS: 79.9% of all patients were resident in stanbul, 20.0% in other cities in Turkey and 0.1% in other countries. There were no patients from 5 cities of total 81 cities from Turkey. The median distance travelled to our institute was 325 km (111 km-2200 km) for patients outside stanbul and 11 km (1 km-68 km) for patients with residence in stanbul. The highest access to our institute after the Marmara region was the Blacksea region.
