Aim: Some nurses have no idea about the validity and the reliability of scales used in practice. These tools are not easily available. The aim of the Belgian Screening Tools – BeST – project was to develop a database with validated tools with an overview of psychometric criteria for the scales that can be use in nursing practice. Methods: A literature review was performed to identify the validated and reliable scales. Therefore, a search filter was used in several databases (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, Cinahl, Invert). The following inclusion criteria were used: articles published in English, French, Dutch and German between 1993 and 2009. The selected themes were: disorientation, pressure ulcer risk, oral health, nausea and vomiting, coma, pain, fatigue, sedation, cognitive function, functional and psychological state, nutrition, continence, wound care, self care, quality of life and catheter care. Results: On 141 selected scales, 20 can specifically be applied to child, 24 to adult, 48 to elderly and 49 were not specific to a target group; 42 scales can be used by nurses, 21 by doctors, 39 by all caregiver and 20 by patients themselves. All validated tools were included in the “Belgian Screening Tools” (BeST)-database which is regularly up-dated. For every theme and scale there is a description, the target group is pointed out, and evidence table has been made and the references were specified. Conclusion: These validated scales can be freely accessible and downloaded on the website – be. They can easily be selected and used in practice. Prat Organ Soins 2010;41(1):167-179
