This article focuses on the novel by Naguib Mahfouz "The Journey of Ibn Fattouma", a particularly significant work by both the subject and the time of publication. In it the author takes part inthe discussion of contemporary Arab thought on the future of Islam in the light of a broader philosophical and intercultural framework: the human condition and some of its ideals.
