Abstract:

Summary Aim: To measure the incidence of nosocomial bloodstream infection (NBSI), their origin, the most frequent micro-organisms and clinical evolution. Methods: A prospective study was conducted from 1/3/2005 to 31/5/2005 in six high risk units in the university hospital of Casablanca. Results: Sixty one cases of NBSI were diagnosed, 34.4% of the patients died. The cumulative incidence was 9.60% in adult intensive care unit and 2.70% in paediatric one. In 5% of cases, NBSI was related to a central venous catheter. The most frequent germs were Staphylococcus coagulase negative (19.3%) and Acinetobacter baumanii (13.2%). Conclusion: The incidence found was high, the mortality was strong, corresponding with that of developing countries. These results will allow to set up a targeted program of prevention and to estimate the efficiency of interventions. Prat Organ Soins. 2012;43(1):19-24
