NlCARAGUA: DEMOCRACIA ELECTORAL SIN CONSENSO SOCIAL Nicaragua: Electoral democracy without social consensus

La vida política de Nicaragua en el 2011 giró alrededor de las elecciones generales de noviembre, en las que se debatió la suerte del proyecto "cristiano, socialista y solidario" del Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) liderado por Daniel Ortega. Triunfó Ortega con un amplio margen, en medio de acusaciones de fraude. En realidad, el FSLN pasó por encima de la Constitución y las normas que rigen el proceso electoral para alcanzar su contundente victoria. Una explicación de la victoria de Ortega, sin embargo, también debe considerar las enormes debilidades de la oposición que no logró articular un discurso y una visión social congruentes con las necesidades del país. Ortega, por el contrario, logró capturar la imaginación de millones de nicaragüenses que se debaten en la pobreza. The political life of Nicaragua in 2011 revolved around the November elections and, more specifically, around the future of the "Christian and socialist project of social solidarity" promoted and defended by the FSLN, led by Daniel Ortega. The FSLN won a landslide re-election amid accusations of electoral fraud. In fact, the FSLN manipulated the law, the institutions of the country and the electoral process to ensure its powerful victory. An explanation of the Sandinista victory, however, has to take into consideration the opposition parties inability to articulate a discourse and a vision of society congruent with the needs and aspirations of the Nicaraguan poor. The FSLN, on the other hand, was able to capture the imagination of this sector of Nicaraguan society.
