Contribution of quality management systems for patient safety: international panorama

Summary Aim: Management systems can generate and maintain the continuous improvement of quality in service delivery. The increased incidence of adverse effects occurring during treatment has justified the implementation of strategies to reduce it. We wanted to identify the contribution of international quality management systems in patient safety. Methods: We conducted a systematic review to describe the elements of management systems that contribute to quality patient safety. Results: Our systematic review of the literature and found 774 articles we selected 39. All the principles of quality were mentioned in the articles analyzed, although it is clear that there are three that identifies the systems approach to management, continuous improvement and decision making based on data factual, which is probably due to the relationship they have with elements of security models. Management system approach: In general, it is recommended that hospital managers are working to reduce internal barriers in their organizations. Continuous Improvement: In studies, we note that there is a gap between current practices of the hospital and the perceived importance of various contributions to improve patient safety. Approach based on facts for decision making: Some assessment strategies are the performance evaluations of staff, peer review, internal audit and external audit. Conclusion: Management Systems are a set of items organized and put into interrelation that generate, maintain and continually improve quality in the delivery of health services and in turn provide strategies and mechanisms that ensure patient safety and in the same way health professionals involved in the procedures.
