Le récit dans l’image : séquence, intrigue et configuration

Résumé: Dans cet article sera interrogée la manière dont l’image fixe est capable de représenter le flux temporel, ce qui représente, on le sait, un trait définitoire essentiel de la narrativité. A cette question, qui nous obligera à invoquer la collaboration d’un interprète construisant un parcours de lecture dans, entre ou au-delà des images fixes, s’ajoutera celle, plus complexe, de savoir quel type de temporalité sera produite par le récit en image. On commencera donc par rappeler que le récit est, par définition, non seulement la représentation séquentielle d’une séquence d’événements, mais que cette transformation est susceptible s’insérer dans une intrigue. Ici encore, l’intrigue peut être prise dans deux sens opposés suivant que l’on considère cette dernière comme une représentation intrigante orientant la réception en direction d’un dénouement incertain, ou alors comme une configuration narrative conférant sens et unité à l’événement représenté. Différents exemples tirés du roman graphique Watchmen serviront à illustrer ces différentes modalités de la narrativité iconique, qui fonctionnent souvent de manière conjointe. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore how fixed image succeed in representing temporal flux, which is one of the definitional features of narrativity. To deal with this question, we’ll have to take into account the participation of an interpreter building a reading course inside, between of beyond fixed images. The question will also to define which kind of temporality will be produced by iconic narratives. Indeed, narrative is not only the sequential representation of sequential events, but also events transformed by their emplotement. Here again, plot can be understood in two different ways: it can be a puzzling representation whose aim is to orient the attention of the interpreter toward an anticipated but uncertain resolution, or it can be viewed as a configuration conferring meaning and unity to the narrated events. Examples gathered in the graphic novel Watchmen will be used to illustrate these different modalities of iconic narrativity that often work jointly.
