Abstract:

Anthrax is mainly a disease of grass-eating animals and this zoonosis is transmitted to humans from infected animals. Cutaneous anthrax is the most common form, and it constitutes approximately 95 % of the cases but lower eyelid involvement is uncommon. A 17 year old female patient had an itchy and erythematous papule started on right lower eyelid and later spreaded to the entire cover, and a lesion accompanied by edema. Gram-positive bacilli in the chain form were seen in the material but the culture was negative. Orbital computed tomography showed periorbital soft tissue swelling in the region. Since the lesion is typical and Gram-positive bacilli were seen, the patient was diagnosed as skin anthrax. The initial and maintenance treatment of patient was planned with intravenous ampicillin/sulbaktam. After two weeks the patient has been found as completely healed without any complication. In periorbital anthrax cases complications, such as scatrisyel ectropion and lagoftalmus may develop even the treatment. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment can significantly reduce the developments of complications. We report a case of lower eyelid antrax which is rarely seen and evaluation of applications regarding diagnosis and treatment
