Abstract:

The object of study of this work is the way both teachers and senior high school students, who attend two private schools in Belo Horizonte, understand what environmental education is. In order to achieve this goal, the researcher looked not only into the problems but also into the positive aspects related to how the content and pratical activities that are linked to the theme "environmental education" are developed. The metodology chosen for this particular work was the use of a series of questions to open-ended answers on how Environmental Education is practiced daily, the study production of high school teachers and students answers to the questionnaires. It was the researches's conclusion that it is of major importance that educators be granted conditions to produce content and activities for Environmental Education to happen so that they can elaborate on pedagogical practice, materials, programs and a reflexive attitude regarding environmental issues for this will lead into the building-up of citzenship consciousness.
