Schistosoma haematobium Infection in a Nigerian Student Residing in Turkey for a PeriodKeywords: Schistosomiosis , Schistosoma haematobium , Turkey Abstract: Schistosoma haematobium, one of the species of Schistosoma that causes disease in humans, locates in the genitourinary system veins and leaves its eggs in the bladder, ureters and genital veins. Schistosomiosis is mostly seen in African countries, especially at Nile valley. S. haematobium eggs have been found in the urine sediment by microscopic analysis of a 17 years-old Nigerian student who lives in Turkey for two years and have been suffering from hematuria for seven years. A single 40 mg/kg dose of praziquantel (tablet) was administered to the patient for treatment of schistosomiosis. Further, the patient was told not to urinate in open areas, especially close to water sources. It was determined that the urinary complaints of the patient were terminated, when he came back to Turkey, after the treatment. Examination of his urine showed no eggs of S. haematobium, erythrocyte or any other pathology. In this case report we discuss the importance of the epidemiological and clinical significance of S. haematobium that is rarely determined in our country and more generally found in foreigners from some African countries
