Steun, weerklank en vriendschap. Over sociaal kapitaal en de breuk tussen Piet Mondriaan en Theo van Doesburg

An analysis of the behavior and position-taking of actors in the literary or artistic field should not focus merely on poetics and profit-maximizing strategies aimed at the accumulation of symbolic capital. At least as important is the subjective experience of social capital that these actors have. This includes values attached to respect, mutual understanding, friendship and support. To demonstrate the importance of these subjective aspects of social capital, I will argue that relational problems were the main cause for the break between De Stijl members Piet Mondriaan and Theo van Doesburg, rather than conflicting ideas about aesthetic matters.
