Edgar Allan Poe: latinista

Rivers of ink have flowed concerning Edgar Allan Poe’s life; nevertheless, many facets of this author remain to be discovered. This article will deal with one of the aspects of Edgar Allan Poe that he manifests in some of his poems and tales which, however, have gone all but unnoticed hitherto: Poe as a Latinist, the concrete expression of the connections this author establishes with the classical (above all the Roman) world. This article analyzes the different quotations and allusions to Latin language and literature that accumulate in Poe’s texts, a kind of intertextuality to which he adds an interesting dose of creativity. Mucho se ha escrito sobre la vida de Edgar Allan Poe. Con todo, todavía son muchas las facetas de este autor que quedan por descubrir. En este artículo se analizará una de las facetas que Edgar Allan Poe ha mostrado en varios de sus poemas y relatos, y que, sin embargo, ha pasado más inadvertida que el resto: la de latinista, una expresión concreta de las conexiones que este autor establece con el mundo clásico (sobre todo el romano). En este artículo se estudiarán las diferentes citas y alusiones a la lengua y la literatura latinas que Poe recoge en sus textos, un tipo de intertextualidad a la que el autor a ade una interesante dosis de creatividad.
