“Pequenos Santos”: uma devo o familiar / “Small Saints”: a familial worship

The saints in the Brazilian popular Catholicism have been well studied by the social sciences, but little attention was paid to the souls of the deceased persons, also taken by their family as if they were saints. This article reviews the study of holiness, especially the saints not acknowledged by the Catholic Church. To support this study, a field research was held during the All Souls' Day, 2008. It becomes clear that the acts of popular piety towards souls of the dead imply, as in the case of acknowledged saints, many rituals such as to ask and pay for promises, to pray and to visit their graves, taking the form of a small familial pilgrimage. The argument supporting the sociological recognition of these "small" saints concludes that they are distinguishable from the general category of "souls" because they are identified as individual persons.A figura do santo tem sido estudada pelas ciências sociais, mas pouca aten o foi dada às almas dos defuntos, tidos por sua família como verdadeiros santos. O artigo retoma o estudo da santidade, particularmente os santos “do povo”. Para fundamentar o estudo s o usados os dados de uma pesquisa de campo realizada no dia de Finados de 2008. Fica claro que os atos da piedade popular para com as almas dos mortos implicam, como no caso dos demais santos, em fazer pedido e pagar promessas, bem como visitar seu túmulo, como uma forma de pequena romaria familiar. A argumenta o em favor do reconhecimento sociológico dos “pequenos” santos conclui que eles se distinguem da categoria genérica de “almas” por seu caráter personalizado.
