Fireships that were designed to burn down the enemy ships had been used in naval warfare since ancient times. As the global naval rivalry intensified in the early modern period the importance of fireships increased in naval warfare strategies. This article tracks down the incidents where fireships were used against the Ottoman navy in the 19th century and concludes that after series of naval defeats the Ottomans found fireships useless and gradually abandoned them.
