This article examines the Ottoman Empire’s transition to the industrial age through steamships. The Ottomans initially purchased steamships from Britain but later they decided to build steamships in the Ottoman shipyards despite the lack of technical equipment. In order to pursue the goal to build their own ships, the Ottomans brought engineers and captains from Britain and sent experts and students to the same country for training.
