Macar Tarihinde Pe enekler/// Pechenegs in the Hungarian HistoryDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.9737/historys_530 Keywords: Pechenegs , Hungarians , Gesta Hungarorum , Turkic Tribes Abstract: This article examines the Pechenegs in light of the information provided by Turkish and Hungarian sources and contributes to a better understanding of the activities of the Pechenegs in Europe and in Hungary and the place of Turkic tribes in the history of Europe and Hungary. Pushed by the Oghuz Turks, the Pechenegs migrated towards the west in the 8th century and in the 11th century they occupied areas north of the Black Sea. They engaged in a fierce struggle against the Russians, and passed to the Balkans and Anatolia where they undertook some activities. The Pechenegs were pushed by the Cumans in the east and they pushed the Hungarians to further west and forced them to settle in modern Hungary. The contacts of the Pechenegs with the Hungarians, their arrival to Hungary, and their mix with the Hungarian tribes created a common history of the Turks and the Hungarians. The chronicle “Gesta Hungarorum” of Anonymus narrates the migration of Hungarians from their original land to modern Hungary and mentions the Pechenegs, who became an integral part of the national history of Hungary where there are still some traces of them.
