Cyprus problem has a significant place among the events which shaped the contemporary history ofTurkey. Cyprus problem more often associated with the incidents broke out between Turkish and Greek Cypriots after 1960. However, the first appearance of the problem goes way back. The first phase of the problem startedafter the Second World War. In 1960 by independence of Cyprus this phase closed. Cyprus problem still has affect on Turkey’s domestic and foreign policies. Therefore different aspects of its first appearance stages should be analyzed in order to understand the problem more comprehensively. In this paper, in the light of the documents of the National Archives of the United Kingdom, the emergence of ‘Taksim’ idea and Britain’s ‘double self determination’ offer towards finding a solution to the problem after the failure of 1955 London Conference will be analyzed.
