The Chapel of Mercy at Marienberg near Lenzen in the 15th and 16th Centuries [Prignitz county, Brandenburg region])Keywords: Marienberg , Lenzen , Pilger , pilgrimage , 1400-1600 , historical archaeology Abstract: During excavations at the Marienberg near Lenzen which were organized by the German Research Foundation (DFG) project "Slavs at the lower Central Elbe river", remains of a medieval chapel were discovered. The chapel was surrounded by a cemetery. In the 15th century the chapel was the aim of pilgrimage from the vicinity, the whole complex was related to a chapel of Holy Mary. Together with the pilgrimage, there was a fair held every year after Pentecost. The findings from the Marienberg at Lenzen include many traces of the late medieval and early modern pilgrimage and the contemporaneous fair; the finds are well suited to connect the history of pilgrimage with its mainly written sources to aspects of material culture.
