De la quête de soi à la quête du récit. Une lecture de El Viaje vertical d'Enrique Vila-Matas

Dossier/Issue : 3 - Enrique Vita-Matas: miroirs de la fiction — El Viaje vertical is first and foremost an inner journey undertaken by an original character : Federico Mayol is an elderly man whose peaceful and conventional life is suddenly disturbed by profound existential turmoil. In order to recover his previous composure, he embarks on an initiatory journey during which geographic roaming is coupled with a pursuit of the self, giving the novel the qualities of a coming of age novel. Little by little, the reader discovers that he is faced with a specular tale in which literary creation itself is at stake. The Bildungsroman relating the journey of an elderly man then becomes a Künstlerroman recounting his development as a writer. — El Viaje vertical est tout d’abord un voyage à travers l’intériorité d’un personnage original : Federico Mayol, un vieil homme dont la vie paisible et conventionnelle est soudainement secouée par des bouleversements existentiels profonds. Pour se ressaisir, le personnage entreprend un voyage initiatique où l’errance géographique se mêle à une quête intérieure, donnant ainsi à l’ uvre des allures de roman d’apprentissage. Or le lecteur découvre peu à peu qu’il est face à un récit spéculaire dont l’enjeu est la création romanesque en elle-même. Ainsi le Bildungsroman d’un vieil homme devient aussi un Künstlerroman relatant la formation d’un écrivain.
