A series of 4-arylmethylene-3-methylisoxazol-5(4H)-ones have been prepared in high yields, under aqueous conditions, via cyclocondensation of aromatic aldehydes with ethyl acetoacetate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in the presence of sodium citrate. The merits of this method are efficient, clean, green, easy work-up, high yields, and shorter reaction time.
