In his early work, the conception of life’s end is dissociated from the Christian search for eternal salvation, as well as from the ethical aim of the Stoics, focusing mainly upon death as an individual artistic elaboration that is particularly favourable to irony and deception. From Bartleby et compagnie onwards, the importance accorded to the comical dimension of death is coupled with an interest in the theme of the author’s disappearance, a theme that articulates the pursuit of a form of transcendence capable of putting an end to the infinitely peripatetic nature of writing. Le mal de Montano attempts to go beyond the bounds of this metaphysical conflict by raising a new ethical concern: the death of literature. — Le motif littéraire des derniers mots chez Vila-Matas reflète la complexité des relations du langage avec la mort. Le mal de Montano tente de dépasser ce conflit métaphysique à travers une nouvelle préoccupation éthique : la mort de la littérature.
