Neurociência e religi o: as pesquisas neurológicas em torno da experiência religiosa = Neuroscience and religion: the neurological research around the religious experience

Desde o caso Galileu, ciência e religi o se opuseram e, muitas vezes, con- frontaram-se por causa das dire es dos seus olhares: uma em dire o a um mundo e a outra em dire o a outro mundo. Atualmente, porém, os neurocientistas defendem que se pode estudar de um ponto de vista objetivo as experiências religiosas por meio de metodologias de neuroimagem e de visualiza o in vivo da atividade cerebral. Este artigo pretende analisar a possibilidade de descrever a experiência religiosa em termos neurológicos. Procura-se indicar como a experiência religiosa é tratada, continuamente construída e reconstruída por meio da implementa o de diversos dispositivos experimentais e teóricos. O corpo de referência é constituído por uma série de estudos recentes que procuraram descrever as bases neurais de experiências religiosas diferentes entre si. Os resultados indicam que o pesquisador pode ter acesso aos efeitos (cerebrais, eletrofisiológicos, comportamentais) da experiência, mas nada pode dizer deles sen o confrontar esta experiência com o self-report dos sujeitos. Apenas pode realizar um mapeamento formal dos efeitos. Since the case Galileo, science and religion opposed and often encountered because of their looks directions: one towards the world and the other toward another world. Currently, however, the neuroscientists advocate that can study from an objective point of view the religious experiences through methodologies of the neuroimaging and visualization in vivo of the brain activity. This paper intends to analyse if is possible to describe the religious experience with neurological terms. It seeks to indicate how the religious experience is treated continuously built and rebuilt through the implementation of various experimental and theoretical devices. The referential bibliography consists of a series of recent studies that tried to describe the neural bases of the religious experiences differ. The results indicate that the researcher can have access to the effects (brain, electrophysiological, behavioural) of experience, but nothing can to said of them if not confront this experience with the subject’s self-report. He only can build a formal mapping of the effects.
