Abstract:

The following article seeks to expand on the historiographic modelscentered on the nation-state through the utilization of a comparative and transnational approach. To accomplish this aim, this article proposes the use of the Decentralized Black Atlantic theoretical construct. This article represents a critical reading of theory proposed by English sociologist Paul Gilroy. Using black press and literature about theories of modernity and the construction of race this text centers on how urban middle class blacks from Chicago and S o Paulo in the first half of the twentieth century created their own version of modernity (so-called afro-modernity) within the structural transformations of public space that were produced with the abolition of slavery on the continent.
