A partir del desarrollo histórico de la cirugía torácica, de sus áreas de competencia, programas de formación y enfoque y de la aceptación internacional de esta especialidad, se analizó la necesidad de incorporarla en nuestro país como una subespecialidad del campo de la Cirugía: la Cirugía Torácica General o Cirugía Torácica no Cardiovascular, cuyo contenido es imposible abarcar durante el tiempo disponible asignado para la asignatura Cirugía General, en la cual está incluida. Hasta tanto, la universidad médica debe, por medio de alguna de las figuras académicas aprobadas de la educación posgraduada, controlar la adquisición de estos contenidos de tan alta complejidad, lo cual hasta el presente constituye una debilidad de nuestro sistema de formación de especialistas. Starting from the historical development of thoracic surgery, from its areas of competence, training programs and approach, and from the international acceptance of this specialty, it was analyzed the need to incorporate it in our country as a subspecialty of the Surgery field: General Thoracic Surgery or Non-cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, whose content is impossible to be taught during the time alloted to the General Surgery subject, where it is included. The medical university should control the acquisition of these higly complex contents by means of some of the approved academic figures of postgraduate education, which is still a weakness of our training system for specialists.
