Diez a os después de introducida la angioplastia coronaria por vía transluminal percutánea (ACTP), fue implantada la primera prótesis metálica intracoronaria en el hombre con lo que se redujeron 2 de los inconvenientes de la ACTP: la oclusión súbita del vaso recién dilatado y la reestenosis que aparece en los 6 meses que siguen a una ACTP exitosa y que se presenta aproximadamente en el 30 % de los pacientes. El uso del stent se ha difundido rápidamente en el mundo incluyendo nuestro país donde solo en nuestro Instituto se han implantado más de 150. Sin embargo, la utilización del stent no está exenta de riesgos y deben precisarse sus indicaciones. En el presente trabajo hacemos una revisión que abarca el aspecto histórico, los distintos tipos de stents disponibles, la técnica de implantación, las indicaciones, complicaciones y la reestenosis.10 years after the introduction of coronary angioplasty by percutaneous transluminal route (PTCA), it was implanted the first intracoronary metal prothesis in man, which reduced 2 of the inconveniences of PTCA: sudden occlusion of the recently dilated vessel and the restenosis that appears during the 6 months following a successful PTCA in approximately 30% of the patients.The use of Stent has spread rapidly all over the world, including our country, where only in our institute more than 150 have been implanted. However, the use of stents has also risks and its indications should be specified. In the present paper, a review is made on the historical aspect, the different types of stents available, the implantation technique, the indications, complications and restenosis.
