Images, Representation, and Pathways of Access to the Past Imagen, representación y vías de acceso al pasado

This article addresses the issue of the relevance of representations, in particular images, for historiographic research. It additionally studies the sources of the power of representations, their multiple meanings, and the foundations of their emotional charge. Based on a case study, the article further examines the possible relationships between the characteristics of representations—which from their inception are transformed into important expressions of social relations of power—and their possible utility for historians in studying societies of the past. Este artículo aborda la cuestión de la relevancia de las representaciones, en particular de las imágenes, para la investigación historiográfica. Indaga asimismo las fuentes del poder de las representaciones, su polisemia y los fundamentos de su carga emocional. A partir de un estudio de caso, propone observar las posibles relaciones entre las características mismas de las representaciones, que desde su origen las convierten en importantes exponentes de las relaciones sociales de fuerza, y su posible uso por parte de los historiadores para aproximarse a las sociedades del pasado.
