Abstract:

Objective: To verify the antimicrobial activity and the marginal sealing of six provisional restorative materials currently available on the market. Methods: In the first stage, the antimicrobialcapacity of the materials was verified by analyzing the inhibition halo in Petri dishes incubated with Escherichia coli, with 30 samples cured before immersion the culture plate and 30 duringimmersion. In the second stage, it was observed the capacity of marginal sealing in 60 bovine incisors, adequately prepared, restored and sealed with nail polish and paraffin. After, the sampleswere subjected to immersion for 24 hours in a solution of methylene blue at 0.5%, the teeth were cut longitudinally to determine the marginal microleakage. Results: It was found that cements that have been cured on the culture plate had better antimicrobial activity compared to those pre-cured. Coltosol showed greater inhibition area while Villevie presented the worst results. In microleakage analysis, no significant differences were obtained. The groups Citodur Mole and Citodur Duro showed a 0.5 mm infiltration restricted to the restorative material. Conclusions: The antimicrobial activity was insignificant and the marginal sealing of the cements tested was satisfactory.
