OS ESTIGMAS DA BENFAZEJA: MEDIANDO UM DIáLOGO ENTRE GUIMAR ES E GOFFMAN

The purpose of this paper is to approach the concept of stigma in a dialogue with the lecture of Guimar es Rosa's short story "A Benfazeja". To achieve this objective, we conducted a review of the concept of stigma and the classification of stigmas proposed by Erving Goffman, and based on these data, we analyzed the characters of "A Benfazeja" and the way the story shows how bodies and identities of the characters are socially constructed. Incidentally, we made some considerations about the narrator’s position in relation to the characters and the narratee, and we took into account some misunderstandings related to the theories of Erving Goffman and the so-called Chicago School.
