Muybridge y Gesell: Pioneros de los métodos de investigación visual en Psicología

ResumenLa investigación psicológica se ha beneficiado, a lo largo de la historia, de los aportes que ha hecho la tecnología de captura de imágenes, tanto fijas como en movimiento. Esto ha permitido estudiar los detalles del comportamiento humano, así como de especies no humanas, con el fin de describir sus acciones y establecer patrones de conductas en distintas etapas del desarrollo. Eadweard Muybridge, fotógrafo y precursor de la cinematografía, y Arnold Gesell, psicólogo y médico pediatra, fueron pioneros del uso de esta técnica, en ámbitos un tanto distintos, pero relacionados entre sí. Asimismo, numerosos investigadores en la historia de nuestra ciencia, se han visto influidos por sus aportes. Este artículo pretende resaltar el trabajo de estos personajes y motivar a profesionales y estudiantes de psicología a tomar consciencia sobre la relevancia de aprovechar los métodos visuales en la investigación empírica, considerando, además, sus implicaciones éticas.AbstractThroughout history, research methods in Psychology have benefited from the use of visual technology, in the form of still and motion pictures. This has allowed psychologists to study the details of human and non-human behavior, with the goal of describing their actions and establishing patterns at differing developmental stages. Eadweard Muybridge, a photographer and cinematographer, and Arnold Gesell, a psychologist and medical pediatrician, were both pioneers in the use of this technique, in somewhat different, but nevertheless, related scenarios. Additionally, a number of scientists throughout the history of psychology have been influenced by their contributions. The goals of this paper are to highlight the work of these important, historic figures, while motivating professional psychologists and students of psychology, to become aware of the role of empirical research, its related ethical issues, and the importance of using current visual technologies for research and professional training.
