Complications in the use of local anesthetics: literature review

Local anesthesia is the most frequently method of pain control in Dentistry and the use of local anesthetics may cause systemic complications. In order to avoid them, dentists must perform a good anamnesis, use appropriated anesthetic techniques and respect the maximum doses of each local anesthetic. Besides, it is important to have knowledge, equipments and training to achieve a correct diagnosis and treat the complications that may occur during dental treatment. This paper aims to review the literature about the most often systemic complications in clinical dentistry caused by the use of local anesthetics.
