Abstract:

Hieroglyphic Tales, a small book written and published by Horace Walpole in 1785, is virtually unknown – even in England. The selection of six nonsensical short stories, or tales, takes to the highest level the peculiar British humor and the English way of criticizing society through the absurdity and whimsicality of characters, dialogues and situations.
