New licensing regulations for physicians as well as modified study regulations in medical schools changed the general conditions for the study of medicine in Germany. Students are called to increase independent theoretical and practical learning. In order to improve the learning infrastructure of former physically and organisationally separated areas, library, computer lab and skills labs were now combined into an integrated learning environment in the Central Medical Library. Students can thus gain access to text books, e-learning modules and skills labs for practical training without leaving a controlled area. This article presents the idea of the integrated learning environment and its implementation and demonstrates first experiences.
