Abstract:

This study explores the history of introducing Ibsen’s oeuvre in Romanian culture and its increasing influence among theatre practitioners. The second chapter begins by examining how theatre thinkers have discussed the major recurrent themes of Ibsen’s dramatic works. The author comments on a number of essays published in the interwar period by prominent writers and aestheticians (Ion Marin Sadoveanu, Camil Petrescu, Mihai Ralea and Tudor Vianu), pointing out their fresh contribution to Ibsenian exegesis. Then he brings into focus the career of Ghosts and An Enemy of the People on the Romanian stage, from the late nineteenth through the twentieth century. The research provides rich data regarding the actors, the directors and the scenographers involved along the time in the production of these two Ibsenian plays. Including excerpts from various theatre reviews, it also offers an insight into the evolution of the theatrical language in Romania.
