Stone is alive in Kostel - Geology in the school for education outdoors

Under the definitionof The European Institute for Outdoor Adventure Education and Experimental Learning geology is one of four sciences, which, with its subjects and me-thods, enables pupils to explore the environment. Teaching topics that include geological themes, run by The Centre for School and Outdoor Education (CSOE), under management of the school for outdoor education, are numerous. In the syllabi for nine-year primary school geological topics are dispersed among numerous subjects.The residential houses of CSOE are, because of their focus on teaching outdoors and using special teaching approaches and methods, probably the most creative space in Slovenia for the popularisation of Geology among youth. This article introduces the content with geological themes in the residential house Fara. The topic of Stones in Kostel demonstrates that geological topics should also be used in the lower classes of primary school both from the point of view compatibility with school syllabi as from the point of view of the pupils’ interest in them. We present some didactic approaches for outdoor teaching, which helped towards the introduction and continued inclusion of geological topics in the Slovenian outdoor education.
