The Visits of Leo S. Rowe to Chile and His Ideas about Intellectual Cooperation between South America and the United States, 1907-1915.

This article analyzes the main ideas expressed by the american diplomat Leo S. Rowe, in his speeches in the fields of intellectual cooperation between South America (particularly, Chile) and the United States, and European intellectual influence in South America, during his visits to Chile between 1907 and 1915. During the three visits that Rowe made to Chile in this period, he held meetings with politicians, businessmen and, especially with scholars. In fact, in his meetings with the latter, Rowe shared and disseminated his ideas just as he did in other South American countries. We concluded that Rowe expressed two principal and complementary ideas by his speeches: the adoption, by South American countries, of a new and common vision of progress, led by United States, and the abandonment of European model of progress.
