Laparoscopic cholecistectomy in the light of scientifically based evidence

Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in comparison with the open surgery method by scientifically based evidence.Methods A systematic search of available literature was limited to the period 1990-2005 by ranking all the articles in accordance with the hierarchy of evidence validity and extraction of the observed indicators of the quality of life and outcome measures. The resulting data have been compiled and analyzed.Results The results have shown that quality of life is improved much more quickly by the laparoscopic surgery than by the open surgical procedure. The achieved long-term results after laparoscopic surgery are slightly better or equivalent to those achieved after the open surgery. Conclusion Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is an effective and efficient treatment resulting in the well-being of the patients.
