Analysis of University Students Knowledge and Exposure to Analytical Chemistry: A Case Study for Developing Assessment TemplateKeywords: Analytical Chemistry , University Students , Knowledge , Exposure Abstract: A pilot survey was conducted amongst chemistry students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation universities in northern Nigeria to examine their knowledge and exposure to analytical chemistry. It was also aimed at developing a template for future assessment. A broad spectrum questionnaire was designed for this study. The questionnaire consisted of 37 questions sectioned into seven parts: A: Respondents background; B: General analytical chemistry; C: Practical analytical chemistry; D: Classical analytical methods; E: Instrumental analytical methods; F: Personal opinion on knowledge and exposure to practical analytical chemistry; and G: Informed Consent. Sections B to E are questions on knowledge in analytical chemistry. The findings of the study revealed that university students’ knowledge in analytical chemistry is inadequate. Their personal opinion was influenced by the inadequacy also in exposure to practical laboratory exercises. This suggests incompetency to face the challenges of modern day needs. Consequently, the field of analytical science in Nigeria may continual suffer setback that are capable of undermining socio-economic development as well. The rapid implementation of the working plan to provide a harmonized four year analytical chemistry curricula was recommended.
