La Ninfa: permanenza e mobilità di un’immagine nella cultura occidentale The Nymph: an Icon and Symbol of western Culture

La Nascita di Venere di Botticelli e la Bagnante di Mirò. Quasi quattrocentocinquant’anni di storia dividono questi due quadri che, anche dal punto di vista stilistico, non presentano punti di contatto. Il semplice accostarli, però, suggerisce un legame intuitivo, come se la Venere botticelliana fosse stata il riferimento di Mirò nel momento in cui ha tracciato le linee stilizzate della sua Bagnante. Guardando la tela del pittore catalano si potrebbe ipotizzare che la Venere del Rinascimento abbia ripreso il suo fluttuare sull’acqua e, dopo un lungo viaggio, sia approdata ad altre acque: quelle della Bagnante narranti la storia di un tempo distante. Complice di questo viaggio il concetto warburghiano di Nachleben per il quale può accadere che condensazioni significative di immagini del passato riprendano il “movimento”, assumendo, però, un significato che si sottopone a continue trasformazioni nel tempo e nello spazio. Nel movimento dei capelli e dei panneggi della Primavera e della Nascita di Venere, Warburg ravvisa una funzione iconografica, poetica e “patetica” in cui vede riflettersi l’atmosfera della Firenze rinascimentale, attratta dal movimento pieno di grazia e di passione di cui la Ninfa rappresenta l’emblema. The Nascita di Venere by Botticelli, the Bagnante by Mirò. Almost four-hundred and fifty years divide these two paintings that, also from a stylistic point of view, have no meeting points. But, simply by catching a glimpse of the two atmospheres painted, the observer feels the tight bound that lies between them: as if the Botticellian Venere had been the reference for Mirò when he was drawing the stylized lines of his Bagnante. When you observe the canvas of the Catalan artist it easily comes to you the idea that the figure you are looking at could be the Venere of Botticelli which, after a long travel along time and space, has arrived to a new land of water (the one of the Bagnante), located in a distant and different time, but where the Nymph can still dance with her striking elegance. An important role in this travel is played by the concept of Nachleben described by Warburg. According to it, it can happen that significant images from the past restart again their “movement” in the future, but with a transformed meaning.
