Abstract:

This study was conducted to determine the knowledge, attitude and beliefs about safe motherhood practices amongst pregnant women residing in the urban slum of the city of Jaipur, India. The study recruited 100 pregnant women from one of the urban slums of a selected district. A pre-tested questionnaire was administered on the selected sample. Overall, the results show low levels of awareness among rural pregnant women. Two major axes of investigation were used - age and education. In both instances, no significant differences for knowledge levels was found amongst pregnant women. The findings indicate that appropriate communication strategies should be designed and implemented amongst the most vulnerable section of society, especially through health education campaigns, in order to have a constructive outcome in the near future.
